Shoot It

Spring 2012

Chris Jordan

Chris Jordan is having an exhibition in the Museum right now and I really do find it interesting. I think there are a few that are a little too visually overwheming, such as his work with toothpicks and I think the barbie shot is also a little too much. But overall, I do enjoy it. My favorite shot is "Cell Phone #2, Atlanta". Even though there is so much going on in this image, I think the distribution of color really brings it all together. I think also the direction of movement throughout the image is more successful than some of the other images.

Favorite Contemporary Photographers
Julius Shulman
Julius Shulman isn't quite contemporary since he passed away a few years ago. : ( But I couldn't leave him off of this list. He's ultimately my favorite photographer right now. I adore his personality, but most of all I love his photographs. I think he has an amazing eye for compositions and the value

 So adorable!!!!!

Ciro Totku
I've been getting more interested in abstract photography and Ciro Totku has some images that I just love. I admire his ability to give you just the right amount of information and the way he plays with color is amazing.

Todd Hido
Hido's work has such a unique quality that I really am attracted to. All of his work really connects and has a softness that gives a mysterious quality to the images. His photographs make me want to investigate what's going on.

Sally Mann
Sally Mann's work is fascinating. When we saw her documentary, I thought it was great to see her process. I love the body of work she did on her family, and the photographs are truly stunning.

Robert Frank
Robert Frank's body of work in "Americans" is great. I admire his ability to document what he saw and I think that he did an amazing job of documenting America in that time. He just took his camera and drove across the country, which is something I would love to do!

Hiroshi Sugimoto
Julee has brought up Sugimoto several times during classes, and when I finally looked into his work more, I found a connection to his work. He takes a simplistic shot, which forces you to focus on the composition and subject matter.

Mark Raymond Mason
I found his work when I was searching for abstract photography. His 'urban' work is great. I love the texture he gets in his photographs and it inspires me in my own work.

Rankin
So fashion photography is kind of frowned upon in our class, but I love Rankin's work, especially his portraiture. He is a celebrity photographer and has worked with a huge amount of people. They have such sharp detail and really capture the personalities of those he takes the portraits of.

Peter Gasser
I came across his work a while ago while searching contemporary photographers and I ended up really liking his work. His portraiture is amazing and has such a great range of value and texture.

Emmet Gowin
I like his work in general, but my favorite body of work is definitely his aerial shots. I really really wish I could experiment with aerial shots because I find his compositions compelling.

Shots for first project:

Here are some shots from my slide film that I scanned in. I think I'm going to reshoot some though, because of how soft some ended up.

Julee wanted us to put up pictures of ourselves so everyone could know who we are...
